The Grindavík town council wants to preserve the traces of the disaster in Grindavík and thereby unite the town”s past and future. A draft of a new framework plan was presented today and includes, among other things, the preservation and use of cracks, lava, and some traces of buildings in an innovative way.

The draft is based on ideas and suggestions from Grindvík residents, but a call for ideas was made in October. The proposals are prepared by

Batteríið Architects

.

Exhibitions and walking trails

Among the buildings proposed for preservation are Hópið, Salthúsið, and the Union house  at Víkurbraut Road. It is also proposed that exhibitions, walking trails, and signs be installed to make the forces of nature and their effects visible.

The preliminary draft includes ideas for hiking trails around Víkurbraut Road, around the lava that emerged through a crack within the defense walls on January 14, and preserving a crack at the edge of the graben that formed on November 10, 2023.

The town’s website says that the goal is not only to rebuild the town but also to make Grindavík a unique place that residents and visitors can enjoy and learn from for years to come.

Grindavík Town is now calling for

suggestions

from Grindvík residents about the draft framework plan.
