  1. Wow… I didn’t realize it was hitting above Super Bowl. Amazing feat by Geoff. I loved this year’s show from start to finish.

  2. This is including everyone who restreamed it on twitch, kick, etc so of course the numbers are going to be way inflated.

  3. Highly recommend the Acquired podcast episode on Ninetendo. Great listen and gets into the economics of video games. Video games have been bigger than movies for a long time.

  4. This isn’t really that surprising when you just factor in the kinds of audience both have. Super Bowl has far more limited appeal internationally (although it has been improving). Gaming is big in every country.

  5. Isn’t too surprising.

When you watch the superbowl you’re generally with a lot of people.

This stuff is solo watching and is international

  6. Nice to know total eyeball hours. People tend to watch the whole Superbowl. Is that true of Game Awards? So, not unique viewers, average viewers.

  7. Yeah I don’t know if the Super Bowl is as big outside the U.S., so that’s not too surprising.

  8. What are they counting as a viewer? I highly doubt it’s an apples to apples comparison.

  9. I like video games a lot more than I like football. I have no idea the Game Awards are even a thing.

  10. Not really a 1-1 comparable in any way, not only in terms of audience but also in how the numbers themselves are calculated. Nielsen numbers (for the traditional tv events) are basically the average viewership of the entire event, not the total amount of viewers like the ones for the game awards. For the super bowl in 2024, the average was 123.4M, but the total US number (ie people who viewed parts of the broadcast) was something like 202.4M, before counting other markets

  11. I’m sure it helps that this is a free event that doesn’t require a TV subscription. Any device with an internet connection can watch.

  12. Idk how these are “similar” its a bunch of broadcasts that appeal almost exclusively to an american audience and one that appeals to an international audience.

  13. The oscars would have much higher viewership too if they announced a bunch of new movies coming out at it

  14. Nobody cares about the actual game awards*. People are watching for the announcements and trailers.

*except some Chinese players who were upset they got snubbed

  15. Imho people are latching too much on the SuperBowl numbers: it’s clearly an extra comparison point just to show how much TGA dwarfs the Oscars and other similar award prizes.

    For those wondering:
TGA is big because they secure new game reveals and trailers for the show, so it’s like if at the Oscars they announced the next Steven Spielberg movie or the next Disney+ show, it’s drawing people who are passionate about the medium by promising more. And the thing is it’s a self fulfilling prophecy: the better reveals they secure, the more people tune in the next year, the more appealing it is for game publishers to showcase their games there as advertisement.
