SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Remember when dinner was a time to sit with family or friends? What about a time to enjoy a meal and each other’s company?
A local restaurant is challenging its customers to bring back those special times around the dinner table and cut you a deal to do it. All you have to do is put your phone down.
“My cousin Michelle and I were working one day, and the place was packed, and it was silent, and we looked around and everyone was on their cell phones,” said Christy Wright, Manager at Sneaky’s Chicken in Sioux City.
A few years ago, Wright came up with the idea to give a discount to those who don’t use their phones during dinner. They turned that idea into a reality.
“You know to give people 10% off just to put their phones away, it didn’t seem like much,” said Wright.
It’s their Back-In-The-Day Special when you grab a box, put your phone in it, and sit down for a phone free dinner.
“It’s good to see the disconnect, it’s good to see the human communication with each other, talking to each other rather than texting or ‘hey look at this on Facebook’ or ‘look at my Instagram post,’ just a real-life person to person conversation,” said Wright.
The restaurant has continued the challenge for the past 7 years, and Wright says almost every Wednesday night the restaurant is full of laughter because so many people just want a break from technology.
“We like it loud in here and fun and upbeat,” said Wright. “The conversations they can have with each other it’s just; I think they’re kind of timeless.”
The Back-In-The-Day Special is every Wednesday night at 4:30 p.m. until the restaurant closes. Wright says she invites everyone to try the challenge and take a break from technology during dinner.
