I assume all of these countries have the same speed, but Germany has a low bandwidth
Big winner here seems to be Chile. Hong Kong and Singapore are tiny by comparison.
94mbps world average? well that’s pretty fucking impressive
Despite its sizeable GDP, Germany is a technologically backward country.
I have family in Germany and my uncle, a native German, despite working in a high position in banking, he turns off the wifi at night because it ‘causes cancer’. Not to mention that fibre optics and high speed internet at an ACCEPTABLE price is a no go in Germany.
But the Germans are fine with it. Germans love the status quo, lack of change and perpetual frown and not upgrading anything because old stuff ‘still works’.
My internet speed is limited by my ethernet adapter ^^
I would love to have more than 50 mbps but not possible at my location… in 2024. we are fucked in germany
**Eleven years after Merkel’s famous ‘Neuland’ comment, Germany’s digital struggles continue.**
In 2013, Angela Merkel referred to the internet as ‘Neuland’ (uncharted territory) for all of us. While she meant to highlight the challenges of adapting to digital transformation, the comment became a meme, symbolizing Germany’s slow progress in embracing digital technology.
Fast forward to 2024, and Germany ranks 60th globally in broadband speed with just 91.42 Mbps on average.
Meanwhile, countries like Chile have risen as surprises, and Singapore and Hong Kong continue to lead.
How much longer will Germany stay in ‘Neuland’?
I remember in my small town around 2000 the city asked the residents in my area if they would be fine with upgrading the infrastructure for the cables and underground electrical setup for future internet upgrades. Naturally the elderly population said „meine Güte, nein!“ and it was dismissed. The internet at my parents place is dismally slow. 10k population.

My first thought as someone completely unqualified to make any claims about German telecoms/broadband is that it’s probably a serious disadvantage to compare average internet speeds between a country which was 1/2 Soviet for 50 years and a bunch of other countries which never had to deal with reintegrating a pitifully underdeveloped half of the country. To this day, half of Germany has well underdeveloped infrastructure and industries.
If you get the worlds most potent electron microscope and zoom in at the bottom of the chart you find Sweden , also charging you more for it
You guys are getting 94mbps!?
Where in the USA is the average speed 250 MBPS?
50mb upload? Look at mr high speeds here
Coat of getting such speed should also be considered.
The UAE might have one of the fastest speeds, but the prices there are exorbitantly high due to a duopoly.
I reckon the median Internet speed is much slower as the average down here.
I know this is average so it’s lower than most common plans sold in each country, but damn the basic plan in Bulgaria is going up to roughly around 300 mbps, while the premium plans can go up to 2 gbps, seems like we have it good and didn’t even know it 😁
It’s now ‘meh’, it’s quick. It’s just not AS quick as others. Imagine that speed 20 years ago and tell how how NO fast it is.
You can blame ISPs I guess, they still try hard to segment the market. The faster packages are often wildly overpriced. E.g. you may be able to get 1 Gbps fiber, but it will be quite pricy, so people go for the slower package. That combined with meh overall fiber infrastructure results in this statistic.
Don’t forget Australia – 50mbps at an average cost of $65 per month. I pay $89 per month for 50mbps for much greater stable service. Compared to those who pay $65, riddled with connection issues, speed issues.
Does this exclude or include those who don’t have internet at all?
Kinda feels like cheating if you have the best average internet speed, but only because only 20 people actually have access to the internet at all.
Das Internet ist für uns alle Neuland.
I would not even be able to utilize 280 mbit/s because my wifi speed is around 150mbit/s here unless I’m next to the router.
People in Germany get 91Mbps? I’m in SW Germany and would love that!
How do you put this chart together? This looks really nice.
This list deviates from the wikipedia one, wonder which is correct
Where was UK on this list?
It used to be god awful so it’s a step up
Is this just Germans being cheap or are higher speeds not available?
Bro I get up to 4 mbps for 35$ a month
Shit I live in Lebanon and I get 300 for 40$
I wish I had this in France lmao, shitty 20mb ADSL in the town-center of Strasbourg
In Finland I downgraded from 500mbps to 100 mbps since they were raising the price on the 500mbps from 18€ to 25€ per month and the 100mbps is “free” (included in the apartment utility bill)
So far no problems, 4k video streams just fine.
Could you show the stats by average paid price in each country ?
This says little available bandwidth but, more what speeds the people chose. Of course you can interpret it as its the max speed available, but more likely its the speed people have chosen, since its sufficent for all kinds of work and is cheaper than the other options.
Also most people are renting so getting a fiberoptics causes a lot of headache cause you have to get it through your landlord.

We have to talk about speed and bandwidth…
