Can someone ELI5 “sealed time” “sealed eternity” etc?
1844 was a wild year for Mormonism – tons of scandals revealed, Joseph Smith murdered, and factions splintering off the main religion left and right. Brigham Young married quite a few of Joseph Smith’s widows, but as a self-declared prophet, he also had influence over tons of other women. And if he wanted a teenager, well… no one in the religion could really say no.
Young is one of the most despicable people in American history. So much blood on his hands.
It’s OK guys, god told him to do it
I’ve got a great great + grandmother in there somewhere
And no Mormons think this guy just wanted an excuse to bang a bunch of women.Â
You can’t plausibly give that many wives (and children) a remotely equal amount of time, energy and love.
Or as we ex-mo’s like to refer to him, Bring’em Young
Well now we know why his last name was Young. He liked them young and ripe.
Looks like 44 was the magic year….
Wow, there’s a lot to unpack here
From a visual perspective, adding the age gap on the diagonal is an efficient and mostly novel addition.
Took me a few minutes to digest but it does help put the data into perspective.
Wow. After I saw under the banner of heaven it really opened up my eyes to how fucked up that religion is. This chart is also mind blowing

I am not an apologist for polygamy as was practiced in the Church, but I will say that many people who participated in polygamous relationships didn’t live together or have sexual relations. For many, it was a way of entering a covenant relationship with God and little of their day to day changed. For many widows, it was also a way to ensure they were materially provided for. I will say I think there was some manipulation, coercion by lack of alternatives, and abuse. There are also journal records of people genuinely happy in these arrangements. It was probably ended due to federal law rather than revelation, and its origins are also unclear.
Members today walk a delicate balance due to current beliefs and practices. The idea of polygamy being practiced today is wicked, and yet those who practiced it in the past were seen as following a divine pattern and commandment. I’m not sure how the Church would react if polygamy became legal in the United States, but it would be interesting to see.
Interesting choice of shapes. Why not triangle pointing down for marriage in time only, pointing up for marriage in eternity only and diamond for time and eternity?
Would be easier to read, too, the circle doesn’t really stand out well.
What’s up with him marrying several 60 year olds when he was 45 tho? (I knlw nothing about this guy and have very little knowledge of mormonism in general)
The Mormon Church wasn’t started as a sex cult but it became one pretty quickly, at least for top leaders. Essentially, from the late 1830s on, for about 80 years, many of the top leaders married multiple living women. They also sealed women to themselves as “prizes.” Wilford Woodruff (4th LDS president) sealed a new wife to him for his birthday for years.
Although polygamy was discontinued in the 1890s, the doctrine was never abandoned or modified. Even today, many men are sealed to additional wives after divorce or a wife dies. The LDS scriptures still teach that women must consent or be struck down. It’s gross.
The ghosts of polygamy also influence the Church’s current patriarchal and purity culture teachings, which really intensified after about 1950.
How many 10 years old did he have his way with?
Apparently “young” wasn’t just his name but his preference too…
