The PSNI value of 64 deaths omits the fatalities in:
23rd December: Beragh (1), Derrylin (1)
24th December: Ballynahinch (1)
27th December: Killylea (2)
Last year we had 71 deaths on our roads, and given there is a closure in Ballymartin Village following a serious RTC today and a few days left of 2024, it is possible we will sadly exceed 71 deaths.

Good god this is getting terrifying.
There’s so little policing of the roads it would be very difficult to be caught doing anything illegal unless you actually crash. Even then I know people who have been in accidents drunk and walked away with basically no repercussions (a ban on a licence they never had in the first place) I wouldn’t drive outside of the city centre now at night, it’s just not worth the risk.
We need to start giving jail time to these maniacs. It’s no better than waving a hatchet on the main street ffs

This is exactly the reason I stopped commuting to work on my bike. Our roads are a death trap of drink drivers and people on their phones.
Niiice?
Driving at those speeds with a child in the car should carry an even heftier punishment. What is wrong with people?
I really really don’t understand folks that speed. Even driving the motorway doing 70 I absolutely hate it and have 2 hands gripped on the steering wheel, I just don’t find fun in speed.
There has been more than enough times I have lost count folks have came absolutely flying past me in their big jeeps and fancy BMS for me to end up right behind them stopped at the traffic lights. Maybe it’s just a me thing cause I don’t like speeding.
I wish we’d see the primary and secondary causes of every fatal collision on our roads. We all know that speed, not wearing seat belts, alcohol /drugs, not paying attention, not even having a driving licence, joyriders, using scrambler/scooters on public roads, using phones etc are all factors in every day collisions and we see people every day driving while breaching these laws … But which of these factors (or others) are the ones contributing to deaths. You dont often hear how a collision has actually occurred or what lead to it.
A summary of age groups of drivers may be useful. Is it mostly inexperienced drivers? Older people? What percentage of those who died wore seat belts? What type of roads, weather conditions etc are we seeing most fatals?
There can’t be this many every single year and be kept in the dark about what contributes to them.
A proper deep dive would help us understand what the most important things are.
The thing is unless you’re highly trained to drive at 130mph, you will inevitably lose control. All it takes is one stone out of place and you’ll flip it. Take a corner at a speed that scientifically exceeds the maximum speed for said corner, and even those highly trained will lose control.
Has anyone ever got anywhere more than 1-2 minutes quicker at 80 instead of 70? Even 90 will only get you there 5-7 minutes earlier because of physics.

Half the people on the road seem drunk. The ones that are going 50 pretending that’s the safe speed are crazy(motorway). They won’t move over when someone’s trying to merge. Pull out in front of people. It’s gotten way too common.
That’s what happens when people know they can do whatever and get caught, in the past week I’ve captured numerous instances of bad driving on my dashcam but I’m not going to sit there and report everyone and go to court etc – I’m not roads policing.
You can confidently go up and down to Dublin and see people doing 100mph+ every time of day or night, ive maybe once, in 7 years of driving seen someone pulled over on that entire journey up and down.
Children in the car. Fuck me.
Tragic.
Although an unsettling thought, something like fully autonomous driving would drastically reduce road accidents. I would be for it, can’t imagine it coming and time soon
They need to bring back those graphic adverts they used to do. That one with the boy racer and the kids was shocking enough to think twice lol. The amount of people just suddenly braking when going into a turn and sitting there is crazy, or people not looking and just pulling into a space and not checking that hey I’m driving past idiot. The amount of cars speed past my house every day raving the engines for years and nothing ever been done. It needs to be police policing the roads all year
Is every RTI caused by “asshole drivers” or is there more nuance to our road safety issues?
I personally find it bizarre that you can be given a driving licence at the age of 17, and nobody checks that you are safe to be on the roads ever again.
