On December 30 the State Police received a report of strange behavior behind the wheel by an intercity coach driver – rapid, aggressive braking before every stop. LTV managed to contact a young woman who was traveling on the bus.

“We all saw how he was stopped, how he was made to get off. And afterwards, a policeman got on and told us that our journey was over and that we could get off,” the passenger said.

The intercity bus driver was found to have nearly two promilles on his breath.

Police officers started monitoring traffic early on Monday December 30 morning, but Latvian Television joined them at midday. The law enforcement officers continued their journey towards Ķengarags.

Seven traffic offences were recorded during the two and a half hour raid. The good news is that no drunk drivers were caught during the presence of Latvian Television. But unfortunately, there is no shortage of them, because 123 drivers have been caught drunk-driving in the last 10 days.

“People are very, as they say, reckless, inconsiderate, and… maybe it’s the thought that they won’t get caught. Maybe that’s the real motivation for why they drunk-drive. So I repeat: we need to monitor the roads more closely,” said Rinalds Pūcītis, State Police Rīga Response Bureau junior inspector.

The State Police will continue to monitor traffic until January 2.
