A senior figure in Northern Ireland sport has been arrested after an alleged incident involving a child.
Detectives are trawling through dozens of messages that the man allegedly sent the young girl in recent months in which he asked to kiss her, sought to take her for a drive and to meet her alone after school, and made remarks about her appearance.
The Belfast Telegraph is aware of the man’s identity, but cannot reveal it for legal reasons. He is a highly respected figure in his sport.
It’s claimed the messages began in the summer and were sent to the child at all hours of the day.
Advice and guidance on her sporting performance were mixed with inappropriate remarks, it’s alleged.
The PSNI was contacted after an incident last Saturday (December 28) in which the man allegedly tried to kiss the child in his car.
The young girl returned home to her parents in a distressed state.
She told them of the alleged incident, and then showed them the messages on her phone which the man had been allegedly sending her for months.
Her parents were horrified when they read the content, and contacted the PSNI.
They believe that the man had been “grooming” their daughter.
He was arrested hours later on Saturday. The PSNI said he had been arrested “on suspicion of a number of offences including sexual communication with a child”. It is understood that CCTV footage from the sporting arena has been seized, and that the man has been suspended from his role in the sport pending investigation.
The Belfast Telegraph has attempted to contact his sporting organisation.
The PSNI said the man had been “released on police bail to allow further enquiries”.
It is understood that he was released on bail on Sunday and that the conditions include that he has no contact with anyone under the age of 18, does not return to the sporting arena, and has no contact with the alleged victim or her family.

  1. Senior NI sports figure aka no one famous and likely to be some publically unknown board member or key admin person in one of the sporting bodies

  2. “Arena” is very specific language. Makes me think the odyssey?

  3. Not a GAA player or the headline would have been different I would suggest…

  4. I’d expect that whatever sporting code it is, there will be a statement confirming an investigation is underway as per their child safeguarding policy – without naming the person – from either the club or the association.

    You would expect anyway

  5. Partner showed me a video of a guy in Victoria Square caught trying to meet a 14 year old boy. When it was from, i have no idea, but it’s goddam frightening

  6. I’d be skeptical about doing any detective work based on the language used in the Tele. They’ll be keeping it very vague to avoid giving it away, “arena” can easily mean “stadium”, and “senior figure” can mean anything from “lad who has played one match” to “experienced administrative individual”.

  7. The front of the Belfast telegraph today says sports chief

  8. I wonder if it could be someone in the professional golf world who has a history of being shady with his personal relationships.

  9. doesnt count as a sports figure but I bet it is stephen watson. creepy little twat.

  10. NI is becoming nonce capital wtf is wrong with people!

  11. It won’t be a mainstream sport, as they say they are well known with their sport. You wouldn’t say that for the likes of GAA football or rugby.

So likely Athletics, Swimming, Hockey, Tennis etc.

    Anyway, glad he’s caught.

  12. First thing that popped in my head was Jay Donnelly. Then I saw the “respected” part and decided it’s someone else.

  13. Firstly I am not from NI and I don’t follow much sport other than motorsport but going by the article there is a few hints that would narrow it down for me

    1) He is a highly respected figure in his sport suggests he is not currently taking part in the actual sport

    2) Advice and guidance on her sporting performance suggests it is not a team sport

    3) CCTV footage from the sporting ARENA suggest that it’s not a football grounds

I hope that narrows it down a little bit and much more importantly I really hope the victim is okay and able to get on with their lives somehow and that they get the justice they deserve
