Italy cracks down on self check-ins for short-term vacation rentals • FRANCE 24 English

Italy’s police chief has ordered Airbnb-style owners to verify the identity of guests in person rather than remotely as visitor numbers surge, according to a circular seen by AFP on Tuesday. The measure is put into place following security concerns linked to the expansion of tourist accommodation.

  1. I’ve lived in several cities and witnessed AirBnBs kill the local housing market/community fabric. For those arguing “tourist dollars feed the community!” Really? You think a tourist is more invested in the community and spends more than a local person/family?

  2. gypsy families have been checking in ….paying one night and staying without paying anything for weeks or months……where is the crackdown on that ?

  3. And most of them did not even pay taxes, or pay just a little—this is the truth! In Italy, the "minimum wage law" is not even in place, meaning that they pay around 4 / 5 euros per hour to clean these flats for tourists!

  4. They deserve to be poor and leave the city. It is one of the most socialist countries in Europe. They voted for this outcome. And they had a poor understanding of the benefits of allowing a free market, less regulations, and behave like a rich entrepreneurial country.

Poor understanding = Poor population. Isn't a social problem to be addressed. It is a law of nature, like gravity.

And they are trapped in vicious cycle where they think a socialist government can cancel gravity. When they can't, and all entrepreneurial people who could had created well paid jobs for them, will leave elsewhere where they can be free to have whatever business they want.

Poor understanding = Need for more investment in education.

Instead of more investment in socialism, silly demagogical regulations like the one in this video, and buying more votes.

It is a negotiation with hostages. The socialist local governments have thousands of businesses that were built on italian culture concepts and real estate, that can't be moved out of the country, like entrepreneurs do, so those places, which now are left with bad managers and lower quality leaders, will be the place where Romans would have to work and survive, until socialism finish the job of destryoing their future, for some immediate benefits, buying votes campaigns, and instant gratification, in exchange.

The problem wasn't caused by the rentals. Leave the entrepreneurs alone and being successful. The problem was you and your culture of ego and stu#idity. 26,000 new apartments could had been built on the outskirts of the city, in affordable housing projects, and for free, if you financed it by avoiding corrupt politicians theft, to instead invest in that. But 10 years ago you voted for different plans.

  5. the government has done the correct thing. I have been doing this job (check-in) clients to apartments for 12 years in Rome. All she is trying to do is save 20-30 euros.

  6. I think this is something that's a cause of the effect from Artificial intelligence and Financial Greed ! In other words , Lazy eazy button pushers use this loop hole to get rich !

  7. I am interesting how police checks breaching the rules? One way is to make a reservation by police officer and then prove the procedure. Instead of controlling big corporations they put pressure on small businesses. Nothing new.

  8. EU needs to ban those types of rentals, hotels are for tourists not the homes where the locals needs to live, enjoy, rest and most importantly raise children!!!!!!
I am a tourist and I do love Spain but I do never rent such accommodation regardless of their price and location and this is something I will never do!!!!!

  9. Here in Prague these types of rentals are now regulated as hotels- meaning someone has to be checked in and their information registered with the police for foreigners. When the rentals are caught not doing this they are fined. When they are caught again their property is seized and they have to go to court.

  10. My friend lived in a small apartment building in Los Angeles. All of the neighbors have been there for many years and the living situation was very stable, clean quiet and pleasant. Then a new owner carved one of the apartments into four Airbnb units. They were typically rented to tourist from China. The plane from China lands at LAX at 11 PM and so they would show up at one or two in the morning, bumbling around outside making noise, trying to figure out how to use the lockbox. Parking is very difficult in the neighborhood, and they would park their rental cars blocking the residents’ cars. This would cause them a problem when they were trying to leave for work in the morning. They also smoked, and left dirty takeout food containers in the unit and in the trash,, attracting ants and flies when this had never been the case.

Airbnb should not be allowed. Hotels are in the business zone for a reason: so that visitors coming and going at all hours and not keeping the normal schedule of working people do not disturb residents. And until Airbnb is abolished, there. should be someone there to let the visitors in and get them oriented.

  11. As a tourist, I still prefer staying in a proper hotel. A lot of the airbnbs are almost the same price as hotels anyway while some are cheaper but with no security or amenities and at the cost of locals. It lend to higher rents especially when a lot of owners prefer to let out exclusively for airbnb or short stays. Also for neighbors of airbnb units, some visitors are quite disruptive. Where I live, sometimes I can't even use the pool because it's been booked by the airbnb operator for their guests. Also some guests would treat the accommodations as party place, singing and shouting loudly. There was even a case of an international fugitive being allowed to stay because the greedy airbnb operator didn't even bother to check the guest's credentials. We live in a family- friendly and peaceful community. I hope more governments will follow the Italian government. Hotels are regulated and required licenses for a reason. Airbnb accommodations should be regulated just the same.

  12. I agree. Personally when I travel, I only do top hotels because of safety and hygiene. Also I would not want to have different people in and out constantly where I live. Italy is right to ban Airbnb.

  13. If the government wants to regulate Airbnbs, then they need to force hotels to modernize and accommodate to the tourist's needs. Tourists pick these rental homes for a reason. As much as I hate that airbnb has gutted the housing market, hotels aren't doing a good job of convincing tourists to choose them.

  14. After waiting outside on a hot street in mexico to be let inside one of these, I just get a hotel. Especially if you're staying less than like 10 days, it's usually cheaper. Airbnb has a bunch of administrative and cleaning fees that they add on which is sometimes more than the actual price of staying there if it's just for a short time

  15. I can see Airbnb becoming illegal across Europe. Portugal has that same issue where it’s too expensive to locals to live in their own homes

  16. Italian is the most less appreciated for tourists from locals. Maybe they’re rich and don’t need tourists anymore. They complain a lot while charging an excessive amount! Terrible!

  17. IT HURTS THE LOCALS! Leaves a gaping lack of support infrastructure as few folks "live" there, (think hardware stores, support type businesses,) pushing up rents causing them to abandon their city centers to transient folks (ie tourists) ..and LEADS to resentment among the locals.

So while it's difficult for the lady- give some folks a job- to deliver the keys- and have human interaction with guests!

  18. GET RID OF short term rentals. Tourists used to stay in hotels, so make them do it again. The citizens in these cities should be able to find places to live without sky-high rents because of greedy landlords going after tourist dollars. Spain, Netherlands, and other parts of Italy are going to ban Airbnb by 2028. Good for them.

  19. In London airbnb is limited to 3 months per year. They could just do the same in Rome or other cities affected. They can also make it more tax efficient to rent long term

  20. Same HUGE problem in Spain. Locals cant find a place to live anymore or barely, unless you pay 800€ or more a month for a single small bedroom appartment in bad condition too. Its a total disgrace. These short term rental appartments are destroying our countries!!! Tourists need to go to hotels, thats why they exist!!!

They need to be prohibited 😡
