LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – If you were disappointed by Lincoln’s meager snow totals over the weekend, you’re not the only one.
Small businesses like Black Label Property Services said they always anticipate breaking out the shovels and plows this time of year, and that they were ready for a lot more.
“It was the biggest dud I’ve ever seen,” owner Christian Burbach said.
To offset the more insignificant storms, Burbach said the lawn maintenance company offers seasonal snow removal coverage at a flat rate for the whole winter.
Likening it to ‘snow insurance,’ Burbach said it’s more about keeping consumers – and the business – covered for the season, even if snowfall is lacking.
“Ideally it snows enough that you feel like you get your money’s worth,” Burbach said. “Either case we’re gonna have the best guys out there ready to go. And the best guys, they’re hard to find, so we want to make sure we have the model that’ll get them to stay with us.”
Burbach said while some companies still remove snow on a case-by-case basis, more maintenance companies have adjusted their business models to that one time seasonal payment instead. That way the cost of labor for workers is covered, regardless of the work they’re doing.
Despite some disappointing winters in years past, Burbach said demand for snow removal will always come back.
“We’re ready for the next one,” Burbach said. “We just gotta stay on our toes because it’s Nebraska. We’ll get that big one eventually.”
