Last year, Latvia provided military support to Ukraine worth more than 0.25% of its gross domestic product (GDP).
“The defenders of Ukraine have been selflessly fighting against the Russian invaders for almost three years. The military and humanitarian support of Latvia and its allies to Ukraine must not diminish, therefore we are committed to continuing to support Ukraine until victory. We will continue to provide military support in the amount of at least 0.25% of gross domestic product in the coming years,” said Minister of Defense Andris Sprūds.
The total amount of military support provided also includes military support to Ukraine provided by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Health as well as Defense.
The report provides detailed information on the amount of support already provided by Latvia to Ukraine, as well as proposals to ensure the amount of military support to Ukraine remains at the same level in 2025 and 2026.
With Latvia’s GDP in 2024 expected to be around the same as 2023’s figure of 40 billion euros, that would mean military spending on Ukraine was worth around 100 million euros.
It is expected that in 2025, Latvia’s military support to Ukraine will mainly consist of new procurements from Latvian industry, contributions to international drone and other coalitions, military training of Ukrainian soldiers, and dual-purpose support to Ukraine from other ministries.
