  1. Isn’t that about what inflation was over the year? Wouldn’t you expect this?

  2. Tbf my bank has so many anti-fraud measures in place for online transfers I’ve resorted to lifting cash out instead.

Came to the crunch last Summer when a scaffolder was putting his stuff up at mine, some minor repair work, transferred him the ££ (so I thought), the payment flagged as fraudulent, two hours trying to get through to the bank on a Friday afternoon and the guy only got paid on the following Monday.

    So much for faster payments.

  3. For some people it’s just easier to budget when you have the cash in your pocket. People are having to budget more than they ever have thanks to the cost of living crisis.

  4. I use mostly cash now. I’m poor at saving and budgeting with online shopping, whereas with cash in my hand it’s way easier to not spend it.

  5. Probably easier to manage funds without the temptation of electronic automated subscriptions etc.

But I just know there’s a bunch of sovereign citizen types crying and wanking to these headlines.

  6. That’s the “cash only brother, ATM round corner” economy.

  7. My wait for a self checkout at lidl becomes 4.6% faster.

  8. I used to find it easier to control my spending if I drew out a fixed allowance once a week. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is whats happening.

  9. Average withdrawal of £112? non-nationwide customer usage going up 16% Clearly not ATMs being used for day-to-day spending but just reflecting bank closures.

  10. Has there been a correlating rise in drug use? I can’t think of ever needing to withdraw cash aside from that.

  11. It’s all the self employed doing jobs for cash to keep that tax bill down.

  12. Farmers stripping cash out of their accounts stored in a safe under the bales in the barn, nothing left to pass as a cash inheritance as its been withdrawn and spent in fruit machines and paddy power allegedly due to a increases in stress related gambling brought on by recent labour policies…

  13. Useless in boots opticians, they no longer take cash unless it is the correct amount of notes only. They do not take coins even though it is legal tender.

  14. Every builder, plumber, electrician, roofer and carpenter I have ever hired has offered a reduction for cash. The poorer the country gets, after 25 years of decline, the more the tax free black market will grow.

  15. Coincidentally drug dealers are earning 4.6% more money than this time last year.

  16. Something I have noticed recently. You can call it cynicism. I wouldn’t call it low trust society because there’s trust between people but no trust or respect for the state. Whereas in the past people would take pride in being all above board. Now those same people will happily do transactions in cash and there’s no stigma. This is tax evasion but people justify it because taxes are so high, taxes are so wasted, and it’s assumed the whole state is corrupt. I believe this goes hand in hand with voter apathy.

  17. If I’m going into pubs for the evening I’ll draw out cash and use it, helps me know when I’ve drank enough and should go home lol too easy to keep tapping away not realising what your spending when out on the drinks

  18. Drug use or prices must be up, not noticed the price myself
