HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – As snow looms over the region, a local business is stressing the need to ensure safer roads and parking lots. Sprouse Lawn Care, a landscaping company known for its warm weather services, takes a proactive approach during winter storms.
Josh Sprouse, co-owner of Sprouse Lawn Care, shared the key to their winter operations: pre-treating commercial lots with brine and salt.
“We come in the night before or two days before and treat the entire lot. By treating the lot and the drive-in, it prevents snow from binding to the pavement. Once it binds to the pavement, it’s very hard to get up,” said Sprouse.
According to Sprouse, this preparation ensures faster snow removal, reduced wear and tear on equipment, and safer conditions for vehicles and pedestrians. Areas treated in advance show clear pavement even after snowfall, while untreated spots often develop icy patches that make cleanup more difficult.
“Pre-treating saves time, effort, and maintenance,” Sprouse explained. “It’s 100% safer because there’s something on the road that lets tires grip better and reduces black ice.”
Sprouse also emphasized the importance of timing and conditions. Pre-treating is especially effective when snow falls at night and temperatures drop into the twenties, as expected in the coming storm, according to Sprouse. However, rain before snow can wash away treatments, making them less effective.
While there are costs associated with pre-treating, Sprouse believes the benefits outweigh the expenses in most cases.
“It’s about weighing the cost against the time saved and the safety provided. For events like tomorrow’s storm, it’s absolutely worth it.”
