  1. Paying billions to give away our own land.

If this actually gets signed before Trump gets in I am pretty sure Trump is going to take the easy win with his voterbase and annex it.

He’s banging on about Greenland and Canada, which obviously isn’t going to happen.

If he annexes the Chagos Islands he gets a ‘win’ almost immediately once he gains power and proves he was somewhat serious when he talked of expansion.

Nothing even needs to happen in practical terms. Simply him saying he’s annexed it, means the USA has annexed it.

The USA has a military base on there and Mauritius has no military.

  2. Baffles me… what we could fund with that money.

    HS2, Hinkley and this….

I’m sure the government love just blowing money

  3. Starmer desperate to avoid a Trump forces U turn headline. Whatever the cost.

  4. They need ro learn the difference between soft power and just being soft.

  5. Starmer and Lammy what a fucking tag team we’ve got there… We’d probably be better off with the bushwhackers at this point.

  6. I can feel my blood pressure increase every time I read this. What a pathetic, spineless Politician Starmer has proved to be.

  7. Why? Why Starmer can’t just say no, thank you. 90 million pounds every year for your own property???

  8. I’ve been interested in this so-called deal for several years because I’m obsessed with the UK’s overseas territories and British Indian Ocean Territory is by far my favourite one, and has the best flag 🇮🇴

Never thought the story would generate so much attention, but now it might actually happen I’m glad everyone else is as outraged as I’ve been for years! It is so spectacularly stupid and will buy the UK negative diplomatic power because we’ll look like a total pushover.

The fact that we’re willing to front load a huge amount of money at a time when Britain’s public finances are under laser sharp focus by the public… and that the money will be used to _pay a different country_ to take our own sovereign territory from us (a number of beautiful tropical islands and hundreds of thousands of square miles of protected ocean, which Mauritius wants to destroy with tuna fishing 🤦🏼🤦🏼). Just so insane.

  9. So they’ll get £90 million a year instead of a lump sump, or in addition to?

  10. Everyone who voted Labour. This is on you. Absolutely spineless PM.

  11. The entire deal is mental. In fact, it’s such a risible affair, that I can only reason that Labour are deliberately, willingly acting to undermine the national interest by pushing through with this. Hell, they are the most interested party in seeing this deal go through at this point. And for what?

Capitulating in the face of an advisory ruling, from an increasingly politically compromised, and thus discredited body, by handing over strategically vital, sovereign British territory to a nation that has no legal nor moral claim to the land and all without reference to the only group of people who might make any sort of claim of indigineity. Not to mention, paying a spurious ransom for the privilege!

It’d be laughable if it wasn’t so outrageous. No politician possessed of even a single ounce of patriotic sentiment, let alone strategic nouse, could countenance such a deal. This is nothing less than a betrayal of the national interest and that is has been done wilfully, in my view, makes it virtually treasonous.
