Writing in the United Kingdom’s The Guardian newspaper, Greste says he wishes to show soldarity with Alaa Abd el-Fattah, an Egyptian rights activist described by Greste as Egypt’s most prominent political prisoner and describes how he ofered valuable support when Greste found himself behind bars for incurring the displeasure of the Egyptian regime.

“I owe him my life, which is why I am helping step up the campaign to free him,” says Greste. “Alaa Abd el-Fattah is one of the most remarkable people I know, and he deserves to be free. I am determined to do whatever I can to help.”

Coincidentally, on 15 January 2024, in Cairo, the State Secretary of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, Andžejs Viļumsons, took part in political consultations between Latvia and Egypt, chaired by the Deputy Foreign Minister for European Affairs of Egypt, Wael Hamed.

“The officials noted the positive dynamics of current bilateral relations and agreed to strengthen economic cooperation, especially in the fields of information and communication technologies, education, as well as transport and logistics, including air freight transportation. The diplomats agreed on concrete steps to deepen bilateral relations,” said an account from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The participants also agreed to strengthen cooperation in international organisations,” it added.
