The problem is that when they gave them their independence, not unlike many other colonial powers, they left a dysfunctional country having artificial borders with complete disregard for the ethnic reality, leading to poverty, iliteracy, corruption and political instability.
Where’s the fun in that? Now we can flex our knowledge of other languages
We just realized that it was easier for the few of us that lived there to learn the local language than for them to learn ours. We did however make Malay the language of Indonesia, before we ruled it Malay wasn’t widely spoken.
However, if you want to study law in Indonesia Dutch is still a major asset.
