Romania will hold a fresh presidential election in May, after the country’s court annulled the results of last year’s first round of the poll, in which a little-known candidate won after campaigning heavily on TikTok.

The Romanian government said on Thursday that a rerun of the first round will take place on May 4.

Last November, pro-Moscow candidate Calin Georgescu took the lead in the first round of the presidential poll, advancing to a runoff vote.

But Romania’s Constitutional Court voided the results in December. The decision came after the Romanian government declassified documents saying Romania might have been a target of Russian interference, and that Georgescu’s videos were promoted by those aiming to spread pro-Russia sentiment.

It is not known whether Georgescu will run in the new presidential election, but alarm is spreading among major political parties and others.

Romanians angered by the cancellation of the election results took to the streets earlier this month. Attention is focused on whether the next vote will be held without confusion.
