SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — The Barrett-Jackson car auction begins Saturday morning at Westworld in Scottsdale. It marks the first major event that kicks off event season around the Valley.
The event which spans over a week brings in people from all around the world. Last year, more than 300,000 people attended the event.
Barrett-Jackson chairman and CEO Craig Jackson says they will sell about 2,000 cars this year totaling around $200 million.
While cars are the main thing, there are many other things for people to see, like local vendors selling art, food and other products.
“It’s a fun place to come to its like the open you may not be a hardcore golfer it’s the atmosphere that’s fun,” Jackson said. “We keep adding things to the event to make it more fun.”
Jackson says this event brings in about $400 million in economic impact, including $6 million in state sales tax and $2 million in taxes for Scottsdale.
“If you’ve never been to Barrett Jackson this is something very unique,” Jackson said. ‘People come from all around the world to come here. If you live here and have never been here, you should make it to Barrett Jackson.”
The event also allows local builders to showcase their work to large crowds.
It’s Hogan Built’s eighth year coming to Barrett Jackson.
“It’s a whole years worth of work for us in order to have cars finished in order to bring here and sell,” said Dan Hogan, owner of the north Phoenix shop. “This week means a lot to us.”
It’s a family business, and Hogan works on projects with his two sons. Now, they spend the week showing off the restored trucks they built.
Hogan says he started coming in high school and has been hooked since then
“It means a lot to me. We spend a lot of time at the shop, so I’m glad they’re into it and they help us,” Hogan said. “If I was at the shop and they were at home I’d hardly ever see them.”
Saturday, Jan. 18, is family day at the auction. Kids 12 and under get in for free.
