An accident and emergency department was closed to ambulances for seven hours overnight on Friday after its roof collapsed when a water pipe burst.
Ambulances were diverted away from the Countess of Chester Hospital after the pipe running through the ceiling of the A&E department ruptured at about 8pm resulting in water pouring down into the corridor and patient cubicle below.
The rush of water brought down ceiling tiles and flooded the department, affecting up to 30 cubicles. Firefighters were called to help manage flooding and the trust declared a critical incident.
This country is a fucking joke.
In February last year, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated emergency care at the 600-bed Countess of Chester as inadequate.
In their report, inspectors highlighted that parts of the A&E department were in need of repair and were difficult to keep clean. They said the A&E was full to capacity and patients were being cared for on trolleys, chairs and beds, but with at least ten beds in a corridor.
The CQC report highlighted a lack of space and that equipment that was out of date. “We were provided with a copy of the asset register for the department. It showed that there were at least 133 items of equipment, in use, that were past their date for planned preventative maintenance,” it said. It also highlighted risks to patients because of damaged flooring.
They knew about the risks last year, and did nothing until it was to late
Countess of Chester hospital is absolutely cursed it seems
