A school in Lurgan have began begging for donations via a subscription plan. They obviously know it would be controversial as they’ve disabled comments on all social media posts about it.

Does anyone else feel like this is a new low?

  1. An underfunded education system

A bit surprising but not completely unexpected

  2. It’s not entirely shocking if I’m honest but what really shocks me is the 3 year subscription, wouldn’t an opt out at any time be better ?

  3. Is the paying to put your name on a building a pretty yank concept?

  4. 80% of that money will be going straight into the managements pocket, this is playing on mothers who thrive off of appearing more involved in their children’s lives than others.

“You can be included in our letters so all the other parents see that you pay £500 a month!!!”

  5. If universities can do it without anyone batting an eyelid, I don’t see why secondary and primary schools shouldn’t at least try to.

  6. I hate the three choice customer success bullshit. Oh you want this SHIT one for ten pounds a month? OK poor person. What about this PARTNER one ooo only a hundred pounds per month now reasonable. Or this Extra special one what you won’t choose unless you have a complex about your earnings and want to prove you’re the best parent?

  7. Pay £100 a month to have the *option* of sponsoring a prize??

  8. Campbell College have an ongoing £1,000 “sponsor a brick” fundraising campaign to help fund their new sports facility. However they’re in a different position being a voluntary B grammar school which receives no government assistance on capital expenditure.

St Ronans got a shiny new school built for them, but school funding is pretty tight – especially if you don’t have the Catholic Church / Integrated education fund / private fee paying to top up the basic level of funding per student.

Fair play to them for trying to secure additional funding to offer the kids the best resources possible.

  9. This had always happened.. from way before I started school 50 years ago.
Our local schools have always had fund raising events to provide essential items. It is even worse now that the budgets are even tighter.

This is, unfortunately , a symptom of underfunded education – we have seen and accepted the erosion of capital spending, maintenance, school transport and worst if all special needs facilities.

It’s no shame on the school to reach out to the community to try to provide the best facilities in order to give the best opportunities to the children of that community … in fact, the opposite.

  10. Signs of a school at breaking point with regards to funding.

Let’s point and laugh at their attempts to fix it?

  11. What does Social Media Link even mean? Do they send you the url to the Facebook page?
This needs to fuck all the way off out of existence. The Fortniteification of schools.
