In 2024, purchases abroad of chicken meat decreased by -15.8% to 436K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2014 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21%. Imports peaked at 518K tons in 2023, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, chicken meat imports reduced to $1.5B (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed temperate growth. Belgium (138K tons), Poland (129K tons) and the Netherlands (79K tons) were the main suppliers of chicken meat imports to France, with a combined 79% share of total imports.

From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Belgium ($540M), Poland ($466M) and the Netherlands ($256M) appeared to be the largest chicken meat suppliers to France, together accounting for 82% of total imports.

Poland, with a CAGR of +13.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Fresh or chilled cuts of chicken (268K tons), frozen cuts of chicken (138K tons) and fresh or chilled whole chickens (25K tons) were the main products of chicken meat imports to France, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

From 2014 to 2024, the biggest increases were recorded for fresh or chilled cuts of chicken (with a CAGR of +4.8%), while purchases for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, fresh or chilled cuts of chicken ($1.1B) constituted the largest type of chicken meat supplied to France, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by frozen cuts of chicken ($378M), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by fresh or chilled whole chickens, with a 5% share.

Import Prices by Country

In 2024, the chicken meat price amounted to $3,507 per ton (CIF, France), approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period from 2014 to 2024, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when the average import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2024 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($4,449 per ton), while the price for the UK ($1,248 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
