Over the past 24 hours, more than ten earthquakes have been recorded just east of Mt Western Hvalhnúkur, the largest measuring 3.0, which was measured 5.5 kilometers south-southwest of Bláfjallaskáli just after 6 am this morning.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office has not received any reports from people who felt the earthquake, according to Böðvar Sveinsson, a natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, but another earthquake of magnitude 2.4 was measured shortly afterward in the same area.
Sveinsson says that over the past two days, around 30 earthquakes have been recorded in this area. He says this is a known seismic zone, but almost 400 earthquakes have been recorded in the area in the past five years.
He adds that in most cases, they have been small earthquakes, but this morning”s earthquake was among the larger ones recorded.
