Prince William and Princess Kate have marked Burns Night with a special message for fans.
The couple said: “Celebrating the beauty of Scotland, the power of nature, and the poetry of Robert Burns. Happy Burns Night. W and C.”
The social media post was accompanied by a video showing Scotland’s natural beauty accompanied by a line from the poem Sketch New Year’s Day. To Mrs Dunlop written by Robert Burns.
Burns Night celebrates the late poet’s life and work, held on or near his birthday – January 25.
A traditional Burns supper involves a soup course, haggis, mashed swede turnip and potatoes, followed by dessert or a cheese course.
A bagpiper will play as guests arrive, the haggis is brought out, and the host will typically make speeches before and during the supper.
After the speeches, guests may sing songs by Burns and read his poetry before they all hold hands and sing Auld Lang Syne – also sung on New Year’s Eve.
The first Burns supper was in 1801, and it’s been a regular occasion ever since. The Scottish Parliament has made it a key cultural heritage event.
The Royal Family X account also shared a message marking the special night. It read, “Wishing those celebrating a very happy #BurnsNight tonight” and was accompanied by a photo of King Charles in the Balmoral Castle library wearing a kilt.
