Egypt has expressed an interest in using floating LNG unit Prometheas, the Cypriot Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, George Papanastasiou, said on Friday afternoon after a meeting which Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides had at the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia, with Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi, in Papanastasiou’s presence.
Christodoulides will be in Cairo on February 17 for the signing of agreements for the development of natural gas resources in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The Energy Ministry said that Papanastasiou and Badawi had the opportunity to exchange views on ways to strengthen the energy security of Cyprus and Egypt, focusing on cooperation between the two countries on joint infrastructure projects for the transport of natural gas, especially from the Cronos discovery in offshore Block 6 of the Cyprus EEZ.
“The said infrastructure, the two ministers agreed, could form part of a new energy corridor from the Eastern Mediterranean to Europe, while it will also be used to accelerate the commercialization of Cyprus’ natural gas fields, by transporting gas from the Cypriot EEZ to Egypt for liquefaction and exports,” the ministry reported.
