Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, on Monday referred to the humanitarian consequences of the situation in Sudan and especially in Darfur, describing them as “dire.”
In a Security Council meeting convened for a briefing on Sudan by the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Karim Khan, he said that the reports spoke of mass killings and injuries, extensive displacements and the destruction of critical infrastructure, such as hospitals and schools.
He reaffirmed Greece’ commitment to the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sudan, while expressing support for all efforts aimed at dialogue and mediation, noting that there is no room for impunity.
“While Greece supports all efforts aimed at dialogue and mediation, it firmly believes that there is no room for impunity. The current Report of the Prosecutor is rightly pointing out that these atrocities are the result of continued impunity for crimes that commenced two decades ago and feature many of the same protagonists. Lack of accountability has fueled and continues to fuel the perpetration of ongoing and past crimes,” he said.
