Knowing German is borderline a disadvantage in Germany, particularly in Berlin. When I (German speaker) worked there, I barely had a chance to use it at work because everyone spoke English to cater to the 2 people on the team who didnât know a word lmao
this must be the best integrated immigrant in Berlin, he has a job.
Me as a foreigner to Germany, do you not pick up German from working in Berlin? Why you need to quit your job to learn German is mindboggling
Imagine living in a country and not learning the language smh
I live in London, should I learn English?
I live in New York, should I learn English?
Are people really this dumb
“Or is it simply listed as a requirement to deter English speakers from applying?”
The amount of delusion to ask this question is insane.
If he managed to find an English-only position, would he just… not learn the local language ? After 5 years !?
English and German are both Germanic languages, it shouldn’t be that hard. Even my Romance-speaking arse could do better in a few months.

How did he find a CC position in Berlin without speaking German?
Sprich….
How the fuck can you live 4 years in a place and not learn the local language?
I moved to Germany just after Brexit went through. To provide some insight on the conditions of me being allowed to work in Germany, for those that are curious:
A temporary 3 month visa on the condition that I have a job and enroll for a state run and approved German course (from A1 to B1) this can take from 3 – 9 months. While holding down a full time job this is difficult but doable, itâs Monday to Thursday every week from 18:00 – 21:00.
You need to take and pass the B1 test, which is required to progress onto the next more permanent VISA (Aufenthaltstitel).
Then you need to enroll into an integration course which teaches you German history, laws, and political system, alongside western values (cuz we brits are not civilised). This is kind of a meme.
I believe this is a pretty standard way of doing things, but since I donât come from a disadvantaged country I donât qualify for a discount for these mandatory courses, there are Jo special conditions.
I thankfully completed all this within my first year and now have a 5 year VISA, it was exhausting but can be done. People that donât integrate and learn the language infuriate me, they are general quite small minded and⌠almost always American. Even though my accuracy with Der Die Das is HORRENDOUS, I think my German is pretty good.
Itâs been 3 years and I only need a couple more to start my process for switching sides and becoming German.
Itâs not like German is difficult to learn. There are only 10 core words – the rest are made by just combining them together in random combinations
How can you be in Berlin for 4 years, be having German lessons, and still not speak German when you’re immersed in it all the time? I feel like you’d have to actively try to not learn it under those conditions.
Tell me youâre French without telling me youâre French
People actually think, and are told in Berlin, that only speaking English even to German customers is ok…
Bilingual ftw but you should be able to communicate with the local population in their native language, not in yours….
Especially in a B2C relationship.
Fucking clown city Berlin. Hate it more each time I visit it.
It took me just 1′ to find him a non-German speaking job in Berlin
The audacity you Germans have for asking a hard worker like this to learn the language of the nation he lives in!
This Post makes me laugh and angry at the Same time.
My wife is Vietnamese and i have been learning it for about a year simply in Love of my wife, Family in Love of Vietnam. I know about 1.000 words by now and study 1-3 hours a day.
Yet there is someone living in Berlin who sees it more or less as a luxury Item, an optional benefit, to speak German in Germany.
I guess i really am European, because i can’t comprehend how you can live in a different country and not learn the language.
Just what the fuck has this world come to. Just go live in some random foreign country for years and question whether or not you should learn the local language? It’s all so messed up.
Digga was?
Why not take evening classes or switch to part-time? I struggle with learning too, but I don’t see how you’d need your 24hrs per 7 days to achieve fluency, especially if you live in the country already. And quitting with 2 kids and a jobless partner is completely delusional.
The guy lives in Berlin but needs his friends to tell him its âcosmopolitanâ BrĂźder was?
The funny thing about Berlin is that everyone speaks English except the people with whom you need very clear communication (Finanzamt, bĂźrgeramt, some doctors and bank tellers).
Indian bro being mad he canât have an 100k job without speaking and local language đ
Why would you learn the language of the country you live in?
what does OCD have to do with learning languages? donât get me wrong it must be terrible to deal with that but Iâve never heard of it affecting your learning abilities?
