Rochester, N.Y. — More than 130,000 student records from the Rochester City School District were exposed in a recent cyberattack that affected schools nationwide.
The attack targeted PowerSchool, the platform used by the district to manage student and staff records.
PowerSchool stated it is not aware of any identity theft resulting from the breach and noted that no additional actions by the district could have prevented the incident.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Demario Strickland emphasized that the school system itself was not breached. “To parents, families, students, former students, any member of our community, we all have to be extremely vigilant,” Strickland said.
He added, “Do know we will continue to evaluate as we have the duty to evaluate the quality of systems and ensure that it is the best for the district.”
PowerSchool announced it will contact those impacted by the breach in the coming weeks.
The district is considering changing vendors in response to the incident.
