The competition to choose an act to send to the Eurovision Song Contest got under way with a live broadcast from 21:10 on LTV1.

Saturday’s opener was officially described as a ‘semi-final’ but given that there is no other semi-final happening, it might more justifiably be described as an elimination round. Fewer than half the starting field of 19 acts (there were originally 20, but one pulled out) were axed, leaving 10 to return for the final a week later on February 8.

The show was hosted by the likable pairing of Kētija Šēnberga and Lauris Reiniks.

Ultimately, one act will be handed a ticket to Basel, Switzerland to represent Latvia in a Eurovision semi final and then – perhaps – the grand final itself.

Latvia’s recent record in Eurovision is not good. In May last year, the musician Dons represented Latvia with the song “Hollow”, finishing in 16th place. He did at least reach the grand final – the first Latvian act to do so since 2016.

But who knows, maybe this year will be different? The ten acts making it to the final of Supervova 2025 are:

Bel Tempo un Legzdina “The Water”
Chris Noah “Romance Isn’t Dead”
Citi Zēni “Ramtai”
Emilija “Heartbeat”
Markus Riva “Bigger Than This”
Palú “Delusional”
Sinerģija “Bound by the Light”
Tautumeitas “Bur man laimi”
Tepat “Sadzejot”
The Ludvig “Līgo”
