Fury as Michael Portillo’s beloved BBC show accused of being sign of ‘far right extremism’. “A leaked report from 2023 produced by a team at the Home Office has suggested that watching programmes such as my BBC travel log, Great British Railway Journeys, could be a sign of far-right activity.”

They must be loco.
The real extremists are the ones in the Home Office writing these garbage reports – seems like they despise British culture and history and want to persecute people who have any sort of national pride
This report is nothing more than self admission. Appreciation of all things beautiful is a right-wing trait.
What about Countryfile? Didn’t labour say everyone who lives in the countryside is a racist.
I wondered why certain users called me far right, it must be because I post on r/transportfever alot…
I just like seeing funny posh man in horrifically bright, pastel coloured clothing tell me about Bradshaw’s travel guide. That does not make me a Nazi.
Love the Tories getting upset about a report their home office created lol.
Ironically though watching Portillo in these programs he’s practically left wing these days. If extremists watched gentle programs about trains and read Milton I don’t think they’d be extremists.
seems people missed, that this study was done while the Conservatives namely Rishi’s government was running the country, not Labour……. while the Home Office was being ran by Suella Braverman.
I think the study is stupid, and made even more ironic by the fact it was Braverman’s Home Office that actually did the study.
Source – Trust me bro
That report says absolutely nothing of the kind.
“Being British” is now considered being far-right by lefties. It shows how deluded they have become.
Must be his trousers
Report seems utterly dubious. There’s zero chance I’m on the right, but there’s every chance I’d watch this series. Potillo is annoying and embarrasing in many of the episodes often epically cringeworthy, but the sights, the routes the train info is all interesting.
Braverman moment, inflammatory headline
They clearly didn’t see the episode where he went on about his dad running to the UK because of Franco, he’s literally on the side of leftist Spanish Republic 🤣
Love all the outrage at a report that looks at people with extremist views and their interests/viewing habits and suggests some possible links.
More of the snowflake generation getting their daily fix of outrage
The report would I presume have cracked down hard on viewers of two middle aged men on motorcycles, wearing leathers. Yep. Hairy bikers are as extreme as it gets when they cooked their Hitlerite Yorkshire puds and their Fascist Lincolnshire pork sausages. ‘Pitiful’ seems appropriate, while still being inadequate, to describe such utter incompetence.
“Breathing a sign of Far Right Extremism, Report Finds.”
Interesting how the tories keep doing this, and people keep falling for it. Labour has been in power less than year, we just had 14 years of conservative rule, and yet the tories are somehow successfully blaming labour for stuff done under Priti Patel, or Braverman.
The bottom of the barrel is being scraped so hard there must be a hole in it by now. Like all of these things, I suspect that the devil is in the detail. It wouldn’t be surprising to find that people on the ultra-nationalistic far right are more inclined than most to watch TV programmes that are centred on nostalgia for the days of empire. It doesn’t meant that watching Portillo makes you a right-wing, it means that if you are right-wing nationalist you are more likely to watch than if you are, say, a progressive socialist. There is no “fury”, just desperate journalists trying to manufacture a story.
Obsessed with logistics networks, and always impeccably dressed…
Great to see our tax money is being put to good use.
Thomas the right wing tank engine
Some of the chino and jacket combinations are pretty extreme to be fair.
At this point I am lost one what is actually is far-right, I guess it is just a way for the extreme far left in west to smear whoever they don’t like.
To inject a little insanity into this conversation, it was almost certainly part of an extremely long and exhaustive list of common trends among far right extremists, not that enjoying these programs was a sign of right wing extremism.
These security reports are generally far more in depth and detailed than you and I would imagine. I bet there are entire pages in it about their eating habits as well. The purpose is not to provide just the important information, but anything and everything that could possibly ever be important, which means they compile everything they possibly can. Every trend they can find, every data point that differs from the average.
Oh Jesus my parents must be right wing extremists
The Home Office needs draining.
Lies to cover up the real problem, antiques roadshow.
So Judith Charmers was an actual Nazi then? The things you learn /s
Hmm, probably overthinking this, but this *utterly ridiculous response* could potentially be fuel to further the actual far-right cause. – Some bollocks about ‘not being to able to be proud of being br’ish and watch Portillo’ and therefore Brit’an should remain br’ish.
– Or some cockamamey nonsense to incite and justify hatred.
Or it could simply be a situation of not understanding causality and how things work. (I carry an umbrella; it rains; therefore I cause it to rain! -False.)
Just because a far-right activist once sniffed a flower, does not mean The Chelsea Flower Show is suddenly growing row upon row of Nazis! Or that sniffing a flower means you’re goose-stepping the next minute.
Is it his orange trousers? A sure sign of a fascist.
Does that mean watching Antiques Roadshow makes you a literal Nazi? It has an awful lot of medals on that show.
Michael Portillo’s documentaries on the death penalty in America gently and subtley exposed some very disturbing beliefs and intentions on the part of its proponents. It was one of the most high quality and powerful pieces of journalism I’ve ever seen. The barking right wouldn’t have liked it one bit.
That said, he *once* suggested that some railway development reflected the Victorians’ committment to free enterprise and my intensely anti-Thatcherite hackles rose, but he didn’t do it again.
Portillo is reformed and able to make a useful contribution to society. Also he makes his own clothes out of old deckchairs, showing a commendable modesty 🤭
What do you expect after kissing neo liberal globalist arse politicians for decades … These shithouse, controlling dipshits, are now coming to silence anybody who doesn’t think the way they do!
That’s why they appease fucking grooming gangs and hate Israel.. divide & conquer is the oldest trick in the political book!
🤮🖕
Spending hours watching algorithm provided shit of ‘things the don’t want you to know’, shit on X and FB getting rage baited I reckon is more of an issue than steam engines.
Wtf has happened to that show? Last time I watched it Micheal was pottering around the countryside not spreading far right propaganda.
This reminds of that headline which said ‘reading Tolkien makes you far right’. When the actual report never mentioned Tolkien at all.
Yet you all fall for it, time and again.
I don’t watch that so I guess I’m not far right then.
