Council of State to review fines over expat voter data leak

The plenary session of the Council of State will discuss next Friday the fines imposed by the data protection authority due to the leak of personal data from the special electoral register of expatriates by Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou.

In May 2024, the independent authority imposed financial penalties for the leak of personal data from the expatriate voter list, which was used for Greeks abroad to vote by mail.

The data breach occurred through mass emails sent by Asimakopoulou to expatriates ahead of the European elections in June 2024. As a result, the Authority imposed a fine of €400,000 on the ministry of the interior, €40,000 on Anna-Michelle Asimakopoulou, €40,000 on the New Democracy party and €10,000 each on the former organizational secretary for local government and crisis management of New Democracy, Aristodimos Koromilas and the secretary for the diaspora at the time, Nikolaos Theodoropoulos.

All the fined parties appealed to the Council of State, requesting the annulment of the authority’s decisions.

The hearing for these annulment requests will take place in the grand plenary session of the Council of State, presided over by Michalis Pikrammenos, with State Councilor Ioannis Papagiannis as the rapporteur.

Additionally, nine expatriates who received Ms. Asimakopoulou’s emails have intervened in support of the validity of the authority’s decisions.
