The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for most of Northern Virginia Tuesday into Wednesday, and a winter storm warning across central Virginia and parts of the Piedmont.

For most of the region, including Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Culpeper and Fauquier, the forecast calls for 4-6 inches of snow, with the winter storm watch in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday.

For Stafford and Spotsylvania counties, the weather service has upgraded its storm watch to a winter storm warning, in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday. The weather service said “confidence is highest” for 5 inches or more of snow in that area, and snow will start the earliest there.

Precipitation will begin as light snow Tuesday afternoon, changing to steady and heavy-at-times snow Tuesday night.
