The Latvian Ministry of Defence has confirmed that it has ordered Patria 6×6 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) for Ukraine, with deliveries expected to take place later this year. While the exact number of vehicles has not been disclosed, the Ministry assured that the order will not impact Latvia’s existing procurement commitments.
Defence Minister Andris Sprūds stated that the vehicles, manufactured in Latvia, will be provided to Ukraine’s armed forces as part of ongoing support efforts. He emphasised that in addition to assisting Ukraine, the deployment of these APCs in combat will provide valuable data on their performance and durability, benefiting Latvia’s own military planning.
Latvia has been involved in the development and acquisition of the Patria 6×6 as part of an international cooperation programme with Finland, Sweden, and Germany. The country signed a general agreement on 30 August 2021, which included an order for more than 200 vehicles for the Latvian National Armed Forces.
As part of the programme, Latvia has also contributed to the development of the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS), focusing on a unified command and control platform. The design phase was completed in the summer of 2024, leading to Latvia expanding its order to include 56 command vehicles in addition to standard APCs.
