  2. Well we knew that was coming after yesterday’s news. Bet he promises to pay for it when he finds the hard drive.

  3. The saga never ends! Although it says in the article that the council want to build a solar farm, so it’s not gonna be for sale.

  4. Matey boy needs to let go. No amount of money is worth this level of mental anguish and public embarrassment.

  5. Thought this knob agreed weeks back that it was game over

  6. I was waiting for that when it was announced the tip was closing

  7. One of the reasons the council used was that it was against environmental laws to dig up the landfill site,so I don’t know if that will change just because someone buys it off them

  8. I love the way this continues to develop.

I really hope someone makes a film of this oneday

  9. I don’t know if the landfill in question actually comes under this (though from the photos I suspect it does) but I was interested to learn that modern landfills are not the huge mountains of rubbish that you see in cartoons. They’re geo-engineering projects where waste is layered and sealed and vented, designed to contain the waste without it leeching into the ground. Digging one up conjures mental images of just scavenging on a big pile of dry scrap like in a film, but the reality would be so difficult I’m struggling to come up with a metaphor for it. The landfills are like underground multistorey buildings, full of harmful chemicals and environmental protection systems. The combination of brute force and fine precision you’d need would be pretty insane.

  10. Did he check under his mattress ? Maybe he forgot were he put it

  11. Imagine if the last thing Newport Council do before closing this landfill is chuck in thousands of hard drives.

  12. I worked with him in Newbridge nearly 20 years ago. He was nice enough, but liked his weed and struggled to get up in the morning. I seem to remember him threatening his boss when he was sacked for being late to work for the umpteenth time. Security had to walk the manager out to his car in case this guy was waiting for him. He wasn’t.

Anyway, back then, there was another chap who worked on the same team as this guy, also called James. He was big-time into mining bitcoin, and this James was very interested.

I won’t talk too much about the work, as it was defence related, but these guys had work laptops, and I seem to recall this guy’s one going missing when he was sacked. A few of us suspected they were using their work laptops when they were in the office / labs to mine crypto. The laptops were powerful and the electricity was free.

  13. Absolute clown. IF this drive ever existed in the first place, it is certainly degraded beyond hope of recovery. Move on.

  14. Soon enough, he’ll replace the lost millions through media and press interviews, he won’t end up needing to touch a shovel

  15. Imagine if he finds his Bitcoin hoard in the tip. Netflix will make a “Digging for BitGold” movie starring Rowan Atkinson as the guy and Will Farrell as the evil Council Overlord who tried to find the fortune for himself!

  16. One day we will discover there was never a hard drive to begin with…

  17. Talk about looking for a needle in a haystack. That’s the definition of this idea, and I’d be surprised even if he did find it, and it still works. Why even report on this issue our mainstream media ignore so many important news stories about things going on around the world because it doesn’t follow the political establishment narrative.

  18. One day he’ll get permission and find the hard drive. Right when Bitcoin is nothing anymore and completely worthless.

  19. Can someone pin the tip in question. I want to get a sense of the scale of the thing

  20. Personally I think it’s all bollocks.
If he did get permission to dig, AND he found the drive the data would be unrecoverable, it’s been sitting in bin juice for a decade, under many tons of crap above it.!

Thats without the issue of the crypto keys still being valid.

If the hdd was in a pc that got thrown out the bin lads would have recovered it at the end of the day and sold it on – see this happening often at local tip.

It most likely ended up in metal scrap and is now part of a bike in china.

  21. Looks like the BBCs reminder has gone off to share this story for the thousandth time 🤦🏼‍♂️

  22. They should let him look, get a cameraman and live stream him just sifting through shit for years, it would be a masterpeice. They can get a caravan on-site too so you get 24/7 footage of the guy as he slowly goes mad.
