Trump tariffs on Canada, Mexico ‘motivated by politics’, expert says • FRANCE 24 English

US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced 25 percent tariffs on two of its largest trading partners, Canada and Mexico, in a move that is as much “motivated by politics as it is economics”, said Peter Trubowitz, professor of International Relations and Director of the Phelan US Centre at LSE. “This is really vintage Trump”, Trubowitz said, adding “last week was a bad week for Donald Trump politically in the United States and he needed to change the subject, and he needed to change it fast”.

  4. Not sure if democrats will "save" Canada. A retrenchment on "free trade" is long overdue. First Canada, Mexico & China. Then Europe and China again.

  5. As an American-Canadian I'm telling you it's not politics or trade. Trump wants to break Canada and force it to acquiesce and become a U.S. Territory. The U.S. wants Canada's natural resources. Canada needs to kick the U.S. to the curb like the abusive partner they've been and find a new one like the E.U.. Theirs strength in numbers. Just saying! 😺

  13. It’s about time Mexico has been properly treated as the enemy of the US it truly is. Mexico is run by the drug cartels that flood the US with hardcore drugs that kill 100,000 Americans every year. Secondly the tariffs are designed to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US, which is why the Midwest voted for him. He’s trying to revive regions of the US that have been economically gutted over the last few decades.

  16. Within 6 months (Before July 30th), Trump will remove the 10% tariff on Canadian crude oil. As energy prices rise, the prices of goods and services will also rise. If this continues for 6 months, the Republican Party will lose the midterm elections in 2026 because of inflation.
