I was working in a school in Stoke when the shitshow that was BSF was implemented. does not surprise me one bit that further down the line is equally fucked.
Maybe using private companies for public services was not such a good idea… except of.c. for the private companies and the politicians who got kickbacks…
Well done Mr Blair!
I firmly believe that a lot of this country’s problems could be solved by simply making it so companies can’t charge the government and government funded organisations (schools, hospitals etc.) more than X% over the going rate.
There are of course laws in place to that effect already, but they are so very rarely picked up on.
Thing is, it could be done automatically I’m sure. If they establish a kind of “baseline” for a certain kind of work. Let’s use a leaky pipe as an example. You ring up 20 plumbers and say “This should be a pretty simple fix. I can see where the problem is, it’s water leaking through a join in this old pipe. Can you give me an estimate of how much it will cost to fix?” and then jot down those numbers and establish a baseline. Then, you implement a system where a plumber who replaces a pipe has to submit a claims form and under the service provided, they select “C-95 – Pipe replacement”. This matches what the hospital has already put on their end, so he can’t charge them for a full plumbing system replacement and if the rate he wants is more than X percent over the going rate, it automatically flags it for further investigation.
Obviously it would be a bit more complicated than that and kinks would need to be worked out, but I’m convinced something like this could exist.
