How UK ‘iron dome’ missile shield could work – from Israeli arms to eyes in the sky

  1. The blueprint for how the UK will defend itself from the growing threat from Russia and an increasingly unstable world will soon be handed to ministers.

Drawn up by former Nato secretary general Lord Robertson and after months of consultation with military experts and generals, the Strategic Defence Review (SDR) is expected to call for the UK’s homeland security – including anti-missile systems – to be [beefed up amid the continuing threat from hostile states](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/uk-iron-dome-needed-guard-against-russian-attack-defence-review-3512317?srsltid=AfmBOooRAsGm2LmtaBrYJdWg3VhKwJlPRuzOZwWz4GV1NKJ0a6gckd0a&ico=in-line_link).

And even as [Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump prepare to hold talks on a possible peace plan for Ukraine](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/starmer-defend-europe-trumps-dirty-deal-ukraine-3535052?srsltid=AfmBOooZMpjjowqWgizI5UDzjT4j8Q7bb30sfifBLvkVR7kP0HGcUgwg&ico=in-line_link), there are fears that the deal will come at a price for European security.

The change in dynamics over Ukraine is now likely to fuel calls for the SDR to be implemented in full and an increase in the target for defence spending beyond the 2.5 per cent pledged by Sir Keir Starmer.

Here we examine what an “Iron Dome” – essentially an ability to shoot down any missile or drone fired at the UK – might look like – and how it would be different to now.

  2. Maybe let’s not invest in weapons from a country that’s accused of war crimes, genocide, prison rape, torture and collective punishment of a population made up of 50% children?

  3. “Increasingly unstable world” that the UK itself has had a hand in creating. The Gaza Strip destruction and wars in Lebanon would not have happened without our complicity.

  4. Who’s firing short range missiles at he UK?

    France or Fish?

  5. We have no need for short range point defence this is stupid .

  6. Iron Dome is effective at stopping the toy missiles that Hezbollah throws at Israel, it won’t do shit against serious stuff that Russia can launch.

  7. I mean it’s just shit strategically. Britain needs offensive not defensive capabilities. Russia is so far away and has plenty of targets in Europe and war of attrition isn’t in Europe favour.

  8. I’m fairly sure than a British version of “Irondome”, perhaps named “Shield of Britannia” would include new developments like the ‘Dragonfire’ laser weapon and existing anti-missile defences.

  9. Yeah great idea blowing nuclear threats up in the atmosphere.

While on paper it sounds good, in practice the dumbest shit I’ve ever seen, where do they think the radiation is going cause its not just going to magically stop at the missile being destroyed before hitting a target. There’s without doubt going to be horrific nuclear fallout over more of the UK then there would be if it hit its target.

  10. Perhaps if we stop antagonizing Russia (a country which poses no threat to us), we could use this money to build houses and other much needed infrastructure

  11. We don’t need Iron Dome, we need THAAD only not American. Basically European defence firms need to collaborate on their own ICBM defences.

  12. We have an adequate missile defence system, this is just a sales pitch for arms manufacturers and panders to the worst sort of pearl clutching twat.

  13. 60p breakfasts for kids or UK iron dome… funny how there is always money for certain things.

  14. So *that’s* what they are fitting on the M25 gantries now…

  15. Maybe one day Nikola Tesla’s dream will come true, everyone with such a good defense and equal, so it will be pointless to attack each other

  16. Step 1. Create problem that doesn’t exist

Step 2. Spend billions to respond to said problem

  17. There is nothing UK can buy that will be effective or cost effective at shooting down missiles going at Mach 10-20, potentially in a batch of 15-20 per rocket. That’s why we have deterrence. Patriot shoots down some ballistic missiles and is widely adopted. That’s the best we have apart from thaad which has limited use

  18. Yes, right now it doesn’t seem plausible that we need this but for once can we please be proactive regarding something? I’d rather not be scratching our heads and saying “how could this happen” if ”insert X scenario that seems unlikely’

Everyone’s talking about an asteroid strike in 2032 but I genuinely think it’s more likely that America invades Canada and puts a fleet in the Atlantic to prevent Europe supporting Canada. I have little faith the UK would even try to help given our current silence but it’s especially unlikely if we have no defence of our own against their missiles.

Alas, in the real world the public will worry more about an asteroid than any existing weapons hitting their house
