Is this really news? I’ve always been under the impression the anti-Welsh Language crowd are just a vocal minority. Happy to see it confirmed though.
You’re seeing the impact of making Welsh part of our identity through efforts such as better teaching, use of original Welsh names for places, etc.
The opposition to the Welsh language I have found in my life is generally based on a “I can’t understand, therefore it’s useless”.
There are far fewer young people with zero understanding of Welsh now. This will have an impact. A very positive one.
We should build on the our own, unique culture. Make Wales somewhere people want to come to from places like the States etc.
Pro-Welsh Argument: “Bilingualism is a strength, not a weakness, and we should protect our cultural heritage and identity.”
Anti-Welsh Argument: “It’s a made up language! Where are the vowels?”
Neis!

I find it baffaling how the Welsh are so nationalistic that they insist on keepign their own language alive yet they’ve voted for the wokest goverment for the last 100 years. Granted the traditional labour party (prior to 1997) would not recognise New Labours version of the party, but it’s New Labour who are in charge now and these people would usher in hundreds of thousands of non-natives and dillute the culture if they had their way. The Welsh need to get clear about what they want. You cannot have woke leadership and be nationalistic, the 2 are incompatible.
Newyddion da. I so feel we need S4C as a 24hr channel on terrestrial (I know it’s available online). It all helps.
Don’t tell the English settlers. They don’t like that.
Ardderchog!
Great stuff.
I’ve only one real issue around the politics of the Welsh language (not the language or it’s actual use) and it’s that there are some who believe that those who don’t speak it are somewhat less Welsh than those who do but these are somewhat of an ignorant minority.
issue is always the how, not the basic premise; surely?
I heard something recently that really resonated with me. Folk in many Northern European countries are fluent in English but use their mother tongue in their daily lives. Why should it be any different in Wales? After all populations in Denmark, Norway etc. are relatively low and not huge and I assume Danish / Norwegian etc. are not widely spoken outside of the respective countries. I know there are all sorts of historical issues that have limited the use of Welsh but fingers crossed that’s changing abd Welsh will be as normal in Wales as Danish is in Denmark.
The main official languages of the UK should be part of the UK-wide school curriculum. If we are supposed to be one united people, we should really be ensuring we absorb the cultures of each constituent country from an early age. Being united shouldn’t be about suppression but about embracement and understanding.
