CENTERVILLE, Iowa — Since last Monday, numerous viewers have reached out to express concerns about their Alliant Energy bills.
Some have reported significant increases over the past few months, while one customer shared her bills for both her business and residence, revealing a dramatic rise in costs.
“Well, my business one last year ran like $400 or $450 for December and then this year my December bill was almost $700,” said Jennifer Elliot, Alliant Energy customer. “So, it was quite the jump, and we actually had a more mild December and I was closed for a week and a half for vacation, so I wasn’t using as much energy.”
Elliot shared her electric rates from 2023 to 2025 for her commercial property.
From December 2023 to December 2024, her rate surged by $228, rising from $394 to $622.
Between January 2024 and January 2025, it increased by $137, going from $510 to $647.
Other customers have also shared their rates, with one person revealing a staggering $1,218 electric bill for February 2025.
Elliot discussed how these rising costs could impact the quality of life and businesses in Centerville.
“I haven’t seen it yet but as time goes on, if these prices don’t get in check, all businesses in Centerville will be impacted,” said Elliot. “Or any community that has Alliant Energy will be impacted. Businesses that maybe struggling. I mean, I’m not one of them, but, there may be some that are really fighting to stay open. You’re going to find that they’re going to be closing because they can’t afford it.”
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in 2023, Iowa residents generally paid an average of 13.31 cents per kilowatt-hour, while Alliant Energy customers were charged 17.86 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Alliant Energy addressed the concerns KTVO raised and advised customers with billing issues to contact their customer service line.
