Let’s not pretend Europe cares about what’s right here. Russia had been invading multiple territories (Georgia, Moldova, Crimea) before it launched the invasion of Ukraine, and Europe was happy to buy everything from Russia until that point (even though Washington had warned not to rely so much on those energy imports)
The same can be said about China. Europe has always been happy to do business with China and its response to US foreign policy has always been “this is your fight with China, not our problem, they can take Taiwan or half of South East Asia for all I care”
Europe has not been righteous, or smart, or farsighted, regarding Russia or China. It’s been comfortable all this time because the US was offering its military umbrella and the money kept flowing. It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds now that the US is retracting and Europe has no one else to shield it from an increasingly f*cked up world.
