If Toronto got this, 30% of citations would be against police vehicles.
DOT cameras are mounted to street infrastructure and issue fines for driving in a designated bus lane. Most buses routes/stops do not have a designated bus lane, so NYPD officers are responsible for ticketing cars that are double-parked or parked in a bus stop. As you can see, they don’t really do that.
In August 2024, the MTA (the public transit agency) equipped a handful of buses with cameras that issue fines for double parking and blocking bus stops. One bus takes a picture, and if another bus takes a picture of the same vehicle after at least 4 mins, footage is sent to a review team to see if there were legitimate reasons the car was where it was (i.e. obeying law enforcement orders, avoiding a hazard, etc.). Now we can see how rarely the police penalized drivers for impeding buses.
That note should say “34 out of 300+ bus routes”
So, how do people feel about this? I know people absolutely despise speeding cameras even though they have a proven track record of saving lives. These parking cameras aren’t really even saving lives though.
I expect this is one of those things that is a small minority doing a large amount of harm.
Linus from Linus Tech Tips shared this about his badminton gym. They were having issues with being all booked up far out, but actually having a high rate of cancellation on the day of or day before. He hated to charge a fee because he understands there are legitimate reasons to cancel appointments, so he decided to look at the data instead. I forget exact figures, but less than five percent of his customers were reasonable for the majority of cancellations. Basically they would just book a slot every day all week, and then go wherever they felt like it but cancelling most of the time. He chose to just ban those individuals instead of sending a warning because doesn’t want assholes at his gym anyway, which I thought was smart if he has plenty of business.
now do one for people who are texting on their phones while driving, PLEASE
