  12. Five years until war? Feels like fear-mongering, but with how tense things are getting globally, I wouldnt completely brush it off. If Russia keeps pushing boundaries and NATO tensions rise, the UK might not have the luxury of staying on the sidelines. Hopefully, this is just politicians trying to push for more defense spending rather than an actual prediction.

  18. Most people would probably fight to defend this island, but not many would go abroad to fight a war that doesn’t directly affect us. The days of conscription working are long behind us. There’s no will in the public to do it, and regardless of whatever punishment there might be, the army don’t need unmotivated people as they would be a hindrance.

  20. I don’t know anybody my age (late 20’s) that would fight for this country and I suspect this would be even more so with the younger generation.

  21. Few things to consider before the morons in this thread start spamming “you’re not sending me to the trenches”.

    – before Conscription there are a few additional measures that happen. 1. activation of reserves. 2. Activation of those on “call-up” (soldiers who’ve left the service within 5 years and Officers until they’re 55).

    – After that there will be huge recruitment drives and push for volunteers.

    – If more numbers are required after that then you get Conscription. But this would be in extremist in a war of national security. So, the entire political landscape looks different to now.

    – Mandatory Conscription avoidance usually comes with a jail sentence.

    – And a critical thing to remember is that you’re not only fighting for your country, family, friends, way of life etc. But also for your individual political relevance. Post War countries are dominated by those who fought, because they put their lives on the line to defend a system. That’s why you get things like the Welfare state / NHS after WW2. They weren’t just fighting for King & Country, but for a better future.

  29. Is it weird that I think this is the reason we have so many migrant men bundled up in hotels throughout the country. To inflict the conscription. Our soldiers wouldn’t drag people out of their home, but I’m sure these men would. After all, they’re being paid for a reason.

  32. I find it so weird that the UK doesn’t have a conscription. Here in Scandinavia, all nations such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland we have selective mandatory conscription. This means that if you are 17-18 and the army wants you to serve, you must serve or you go to jail.

    Here in Norway, we have made conscription mandatory for girls also. Our army is now around 36% female and rest male.

    Sadly we don’t have the largest army anymore, I’m old enough to remember having a standing army of 170 000 troops , but nowadays it’s 15 000 as our politicians just handed over the defense of Norway to the Americans, so they sliced conscription percentage rates.

    That’s about to change, though, as our government will dramatically increase conscription percentages and buy tons of military hardware, such as attack choppers, artillery, submarines, drones etc.

    Many of these purchases will come from the UK, which we are making a defense contract with.

  34. If the UK itself is under attack I don’t think you would need conscription there would be more volunteers than they could train. Non-combat conscription might be useful to pre-train people, as in Finland, but I don’t agree with it. Military service should always be voluntary. If we only have to defend the NATO borders we (NATO excluding the US) have professional forces more than up to the task given the level of threat – basically only Russia who couldn’t even overwhelm one country by itself.

  36. There is not a chance this will work, people now are too weak and too divided. A portion simply are too cynical and too mistrusting of the establishment to ever defend the country, and others simply wouldn’t be able to hack it in a war. I’ll openly admit, reading some the accounts in in Ukraine they are utterly insane. I’d probably fold if forced to fight in Bakhmut and I’d wager most reading this would give up also.

    This is why Ukraine needs to be given everything to win, as Western Europe is too soft to fight. It needs to stop there.

  45. My husband died serving for his country. In a war he didn’t really want to be part of thanks to Blair & Bush starting it all. US marine shot & killed him. Cunts. I lost my soul mate 21 years ago & I’m still bitter about it. 😔
