  1. A few years ago, my partner and I decided to get into triathlon as a new challenge in life. We started from a generally athletic base (BJJ and lifting for her, running and lifting for me) and had to train like crazy to get our bodies up to par. I had to learn how to swim, which was the biggest struggle for me.

We ramped up our races, starting small (a sprint distance is not standard, but typically somewhere around a 500 yard swim, 12 mile bike, and 5k run) and working up to an Ironman over the course of two years.

    Data:
The training data here was recorded on our Garmin devices (watches and bike computers) and the summaries come from Garmin Connect.

The spending data was recorded in Google Sheets.

  2. Very nice.

I’ve gone from reluctant cardio person to serious (albeit slow and non-competitive) runner over the last five years. I’m getting very close to being able to run marathons (I did at least half on 13 occasions in 2024), but can’t imagine doing the swimming (from skills and strength perspectives) or biking (from endurance and strength perspectives), let alone all three on a day.

  3. So, the running part is the cheapest. I think I’ll stick to it 😀

  4. You’ve only swum 48000 yards? So your Ironman swim is going to represent 10% of your life time yardage?

  5. That’s crazy you’ve only spent ~$240 on running shoes over 1100 miles. How much mileage do you get out of your shoes normally. And do you have racing shoes separate from trainers?
