Can we take the crown estates back from the Scottish Government then? It’s only fair.
BBC 25/02/25: Treasury minister James Murray, told MPs that devolving the estates to the Welsh government would make “no commercial sense”.
BBC 11/02/25: Treasury minister Darren Jones had said that no discussions had taken place in a written answer to an MP in early January.
But Jones later said it had been raised between Welsh and UK ministers, although he said giving Wales power over the land would not be in its best interests
“No commercial sense” — for who? Wales or Westminster?
“Would not be in its best interests” — just in Westminster’s best interests.
Wales: “we wanna talk about separating from you a bit”
England: “no.”
Do they really get to just reject calls like that..?
Same old Labour
What really fucks me off about this is what another article from the BBC states Darren Jones said…
>But Jones later said it had been raised between Welsh and UK ministers, although he said giving Wales power over the land would not be in its best interests.
I’m not one to jump to shouting about English imperialism, but it smacks of “In Westminster we know what’s best for you, now run along and behave yourself while the adults talk”
Seems ridiculous the Crown Estate exists at all.
It makes 15 million pounds a year. That’s 2 secondary school budgets… It’s not a lot of money in the grand scheme of the economy. Also if it was separated from the English part, Wales would have to pay the sovereign grant out of it, making it even less…
Also if it was devolved to Cardiff they’d either try to sell it off for pennies on the pound or the profit would be put into another vanity scheme
So English people get to vote in Welsh elections, including any potential devolution or independence referendum.. or just maybe a vote on Wales joining Europe, but England gets to keep the Crown estate value on Welsh territory.
Hmmm. I can see why people are restless for reform.. just not the farage version 🙄
Different London government, same shit coming down the line.
Do they ever explain why it’s not in our interests?
Listing the benefits Wales alone gets from it as things stand and how we would ‘lose’ those benefits if it was transferred to our control?
There’s a hell of a lot of wind turbines off our coast that are in waters the Crown owns, can’t really see how us owning those waters and having contracts with multi national energy companies that want to put up more would be against our interests.
But yea, this is the government that thinks being able to get to London a bit quicker from North Wales (when did you last go?) qualifies a railway project from London to Birmingham as a Welsh one too.
Funny, for the last 14 years the Welsh Labour party has trumpeted how much different it will be with a Labour govt in WM.
But it’s not is it?
Already on issues like this they double down to the same old tired arguments the Tories used.
The same suits just with different coloured ties.
Enjoy the South Wales valleys switching to Reform because you can’t demonstrate what you have done for the Welsh people in Govt Sir Kier.
