In the coming days, rivers are expected to see a slight rise in water levels, but as ice melts, some river sections may experience sharp fluctuations in water levels. Water levels will depend mainly on precipitation. If there is little rain, the ice will not start to move and will melt on the spot.
Hydrologists expect the Daugava and Plaviņas reservoirs to experience sharp fluctuations in water levels during the ice advance due to the existing ice compaction.
There is some compaction of ice also in the Gauja, Lielupe and Ogre rivers.
Water levels in most Latvian rivers are likely to be lower in March than in January when floodplains were underwater in many places due to warm and rainy weather.
