  1. May sound self sucking…but given the recent international events i have to go with the quote from Bismarck.

Going by just coolness, its the one from Voltaire.

  2. “The most ignorant people I have ever conquered. They cannot be taught music.”

    -Julius Caeser on British people

  3. “There are eight sail of the line, Sir John”
    “Very well, sir”
“There are twenty sail of the line, Sir John”
    “Very well, sir”
“There are twenty five sail of the line, Sir John”
    “Very well, sir”
“There are twenty seven sail of the line, Sir John”

“Enough, sir, no more of that; the die is cast, and if there are fifty sail I will go through them.

  4. I’ll put my faith in Bismarck aside for one moment and say that Oscar Wilde easily wins this one

  5. This is not what I’ve read about Voltaire.

I read that he alledgedly said on his deathbed to his physician that he’s give half his possessions to him for another 6 months of life. When told it was not possible, he said ”then I shall go to hell”

His nurse told later that he weeped and cried for mercy the entire night.

  6. 🇮🇪🇮🇪 – I guess they went back to starting point

  7. Not being biased but that Oscar Wilde quote goes the hardest

  8. There is something wrong with my brain. I don’t know if it’s too bad or too good, but it’s not what it should be.

    /Hjalmar Söderberg

  9. That Voltaire quote is definitely apocryphal. He had been begging for a priest for a while before his death, after all.

We know his last written words were “I die adoring God, loving my friends, not hating my enemies and despising superstition.” tho his last spoken words were apparently him calling for his servant.

  10. I think Bismarck wins this one. Fantastic quote, and very prescient right now.

  11. “Where some states possess an army, the Prussian army possesses a state”

    I love Voltaire

  12. “Ignorance can be cured, but stupidity is forever”

    ~ Aristophanes

  13. I’d go with Voltaire’s pitch black morbid humor for this one. All great quotes tbh

  14. Above all, don’t lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.
    Fyodor Dostoevsky – on Trump

  15. “Politicians and diapers must be changed once in a while for the same reason”

    Eça de Queirós

  16. I would put forward Bomber Harris for England. His Whirlwind speech goes unbelievably hard. It has several gems in only about 3 minutes:

“The Nazis entered this war under the rather childish delusion that they were going to bomb everyone else, and nobody was going to bomb them. At Rotterdam, London, Warsaw, and half a hundred other places, they put their rather naive theory into operation. They sowed the wind, and now they are going to reap the whirlwind.”

“When the storm bursts over Germany, they will look back to the days of Lubeck and Rostock and Cologne as a man caught in the blasts of a hurricane will look back to the gentle zephyrs of last summer.”

“There are a lot of people who say that bombing can never win a war. Well, my answer to that is that it has never been tried yet, and we shall see.”

  17. Cortés had a better quote, when he met Charles V he told him “I have given his Majesty more kingdoms and dominions than those left to him by his ancestors.”

His motto was: “God judged them in their actions, found them guilty and made my arm strong.”

Bernardo Vargas Machuca, another conqueror, naturalist and veterinarian had this motto: “To the sword and the compass, more, and more, and more”.

  18. “You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing, after they’ve tried everything else” – Churchill

“You may be sure that the Americans will commit all the stupidities they can think of, plus some that are beyond imagination.” – De Gaulle

    Great minds think alike.
