Luxembourg is ramping up precautionary measures against African Swine Fever (ASF), extending a wild boar culling incentive and preparing emergency response plans after an outbreak was reported in Germany.
An outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Germany prompted the Luxembourg Agriculture and Environment Ministries to take part in a strategic meeting on Monday. It was noted that Luxembourg remains free of ASF for the time being, but precaution is due, with a number of preventive measures being taken.
Firstly, the €50 shooting incentive for young wild boar will be extended until 31 March 2026 to rapidly reduce the wild boar population. The incentive will also be coupled with an analysis of hunting hours.
Other important measures include the planning of two new game collection centres in Niederfeulen and Marnach, stockpiling 30 kilometres of electric fencing that can be rapidly deployed in the event of a first case of ASF in Luxembourg, and launching a training programme for search dogs to find wild boar carcasses.
The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) points out that access to pig farms “remains strictly limited to authorised persons”. Similarly, any wild boar carcass found in the wild must be reported to ALVA (tel.: 247-82539) for analysis at the Laboratory of Veterinary Medicine.
