No relief for Mukesh Ambani in Rs 24490 crore Reliance case as Petroleum Minister Puri says….
The government wants a claim of billions of dollars from Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries. The Delhi High Court has ruled in favor of the government in this case. Now the Petroleum Minister has said that the government will try till the end to recover this money. What is the whole matter?
The Government of India has to recover $2.81 billion (about Rs 24,490 crore) from the country’s most valuable company Reliance Industries and its partners. In a case related to natural gas extraction, the Delhi High Court has given the verdict in favor of the government. Now the government has also made preparations to recover every penny from Mukesh Ambani. A big statement has been given in this regard by Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that his ministry will try till the end to get the demand of $2.81 billion from Reliance Industries and its partners. His statement is being considered a big response from the government in this matter.
What is the whole matter?
Actually this case is related to natural gas extraction by Reliance Industries and its partner firms. The government claims that Reliance and its partner firms extracted natural gas from gas fields which they had no right to use. In this case, the Indian government claimed that Reliance should pay a sum of $1.55 billion. Reliance took this case to an international arbitration court, where the decision came in its favor in July 2018. The government’s claim of $1.55 billion was rejected.
After this, the government knocked the door of Delhi High Court. On the 14th of last month, the Delhi High Court gave a verdict in favor of the government. Only after this, a demand notice of $ 2.81 billion has been issued by the government. Reliance has confirmed receiving this notice on March 3, 2025.
What did the Petroleum Minister say?
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that the court’s decision on this dispute related to ‘gas migration’ (movement from one block to another) clearly proves the authority of the government.
During an event in Delhi, when Hardeep Singh Puri was questioned about the recovery of $2.81 billion, he said, “I want to assure you that the court’s decision is very clear. We have already applied for the demand of $2.81 billion. We will try to get this right till the end. Of course, it is everyone’s right to appeal against the decision in the Supreme Court.”
This case is related to the KG-D6 block located in the Krishna-Godavari basin. Reliance has the right to extract natural gas in this area, although the government company ONGC claims that Reliance has transferred the gas from the KG-DWN-98/2 block located in the same area. The KG-DWN-98/2 block was allotted to ONGC.
