As a sunny day in London Fields draws to a close

  1. I mean atleast it’s in a nice pile for the most part . In America that stuff would be everywhere.

  2. Guess that’s what happens if you don’t have council staff emptying the bins.

  3. Ye I think this shows the need for more bins. People have responsibly picked their stuff up and left is, while annoyingly around the bin.

  4. They need to put more bins there. It will be worse in the summer.

  5. If you managed to take your stuff there, you can take the wrapping back. Even more so for those who have left it in bags.

  6. I don’t miss living in Hackney. People saying the council should have more bins don’t realise just how busy this park gets on a day like today. No blade of grass is left.

  7. I mean sure more bins would be helpful but would it kill people to bring the trash home that they brought with then? Prob a bit judgemental of me but it smacks of ‘someone else’s problem’ attitude. You brought the litter, therefore it’s your responsibility

  8. All to be torn apart overnight and liberally distributed over a wide area by Hackney’s foxes.

  9. Why can’t we just take rubbish home like the Japanese?

  10. at least it’s all concentrated in one area instead of being tossed around….?

  11. At least there’s no longer any scorched patches of ground where the disposable BBQs have been. Or disposed-of disposable BBQs.

  12. I don’t think this is the council’s fault.

If you see a full bin, you take it to the next bin. This is just shameful people.

“Oh no! There’s nowhere I can put my trash so this is the council’s fault that I put it on the floor”

Hipster central – that is what I expect. It’s all food bags and beer bottles.

  13. Currently working in Japan and this glimpse of back home is jarring considering how clean the streets are here.

  14. Seeing as I’m being downvoted to fuck for suggesting that people take their litter home, can I offer some information given that I’ve spent a lot of time emptying bins in public spaces in summer.

When you pile your litter around and on top of a bin, it takes us much more time to empty the bin. This is because everything piled on top falls off as soon as you try to pull the bin out. You then also have to pick up everything that’s on the floor around it. This makes a two minute job into a 20 minute job, more if foxes have spread it all around a 50 ft radius. If the bins are bigger, you can’t lift them. Emptying bins is a physically taxing and time-consuming job when you have 50+ to do in one shift. You also get people coming up to you and dropping their litter either into the bin you’re trying to empty or throwing it in your direction which is just fucking rude and then takes more time to pick up.

So tell me again why you can’t take your litter home and it’s someone else’s fault that you had to pile your litter on top of a full bin.

  15. @binsoflondon on Instagram is worth a look at! Overflowing bin satire!

  16. All the comments saying need more bins makes me think of a school trip to Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales.

They promote and keep a cleaner area by not having any bins at all. Making people more mindful of actually taking the rubbish home.

Learning this as a kid blew my mind but the more places i’ve been, that tend not to have rubbish everywhere, are places where there’s nowhere to put said rubbish.

Would this work in a London park though is another matter. Worth a try, since councils are strapped for cash so they’re definitely not installing more or collecting more frequently. Remove them entirely from some select parks, see what happens.

  17. If you can take stuff with you to the park, you can take it home you dirty fuckers

  18. I live nearby. They do have big bins sometimes. I imagine in summer when the park gets more use. They didn’t expect the amount of visitors nor did any of the shops. I think they don’t always put the big bins out because they need big bin lorries to clear. This morning park maintenance people were clearing up the rubbish. It did not look fun.

  19. Hackney council knows how many people use the park when the weather is good. They know there isn’t enough bins. This is not on the people using the facilities it’s on the council who couldn’t be arsed to provide adequate waste disposal to their community

  20. I mean, I know that more bins are required, obviously, but… if you see the bin is bloody full, can’t you carry whatever rubbish you have a few yards down to another, less full bin?

  21. We should get those underground bins like they have in the Netherlands. Probably cost a lot more money tho tbf

  22. Consumer society is alive and well. It’s a good indicator of economic health. Good few grands worth of food and drink there.

  23. Till a few foxes come at night and spread the mess around.
But defo better that leaving the stuff all around the park.

  24. It looks bad in the picture, but it’s nice to see ppl are generally respectful and trying to put things around the bin. Clearly local authority needs to look at more frequent bin emptying

  25. I’m really glad the top comments here are putting the blame on the council.

Facts are, we know people are unlikely to be personally responsible, so setting them up for failure results in this. Just put more bigger bins there. For big events or whatever, just fucking put a skip there.

  26. Let’s be real, people don’t care about being disrespectful and disgusting like this because “It’S ThU CoUNcil’S pRublEM’’, so they can wipe away any responsibility towards not being disgusting.

  27. I guess at least it’s next to the bin. But London fields is East London so this seems normal because large swathes of East London are a permanent dump. London fields being one of them

  28. People made an effort here.

When people want to do the right thing (put rubbish in bin) but can’t , and asking them to do the other right thing (take rubbish home/away) would require a big change in existing behaviour, it’s always more effective to make it easier for them to do the right thing they already want to do (add more/larger bins).

  29. I thought this was a positive post about how neat and tidy everyone at the park was being. The grass areas look spotless and everyone has taken their trash to the bin. But most people seem to be seeing the negative.

Going by everyone going to parks today this is probably just todays rubbish too and it’s not a matter of councils not emptying their bins often. It does need more bins though for sure, even if its just sticking a few more next to this one. Couple of people can install them all in 1 shift.

I’m sure it’ll likely be collected tomorrow once council staff are back in.

  30. That actually looks tidy as fuck considering the location

  31. At least they left it by the bin rather than any ol’ where. Best of a bad situation.
