This is why European cities are more sociable and cleaner than a lot of UK cities. The only trouble is our weather.
For the 2 weeks of nice weather per year?

pretty sure i saw labour are literally banning this.
The tables is how I make money and pay bills
Works as its not a through road – looks like it ends up at a green space.
Having left the UK after decades I notice we Brits can’t have nice things because society opposes any change.
You can go around and see non-car prioritised cities and deliveries still get made and old people still get about even by bus, bike or mobility scooter.
You can see 15 minute cities where it is not a political hot button issue and everything on your doorstep is amaaaazing.
You can go see people out and chilling outside local bars and restaurants like this because they have the space for it.
This stuff is totally impossible in the UK. And yet we can get on a 1 or 2 hour flight and see some of these things like city planning done better.
If only our weather could meet our optimism. 🇬🇧
There is a road where I live that I think should be closed and made into a public area. It would take 20 seconds to drive round from one side to the other so the road is not really required. It would make the area a bit better.
Great idea for the few sunny warm days we have, but what about the rest of the year
Then charge £7 a pint so that no one goes, then loads of nice boarded up pubs and empty streets you can’t even drive down. Prefect.
While in this case it works, it looks like a dead end road that attaches onto a park anyways. Not many examples of spaces like that exist.
The unfortunate thing is that land is a premium and our road infrastructure has been built up over literally hundreds of years in many towns and cities. If we were starting from scratch without already existing infrastructure, without existing road layouts then sure this is awesome. We can only go on a case by case basis though, because closing the wrong streets can lead to other streets becoming congested and backed up. And that’s not something we want in the middle of our towns and cities.

100%, make city centres for people not cars
got rid of the lung damage so we can have the liver damage
Careful, the car-brains will start protesting
Just please not main roads at random times of day with no plan to accommodate for the traffic that now needs to find a different route.
My city chose the absolute stupidest street to shut down for like 10 hours the entire weekend, the worst part of it is that there is literally nowhere for anyone to park because they blocked the only parking spaces, and the only easy detour is a one way street that adds an extra 10 minutes to get to the other side of the street in both directions.
