In 2024, Italy set a new record in the tourism sector, reaching 458.4 million overnight stays, surpassing France and securing second place in Europe, just behind Spain.
Growth in Tourism Numbers
According to provisional data from ISTAT, Italy’s tourism sector grew by 2.5% compared to 2023, exceeding the EU average growth of 1.9%. This increase was mainly driven by foreign tourists, whose numbers grew by 6.8%, while domestic tourism declined by 7.6%.
Comparison with France and Spain
France recorded 450.1 million overnight stays in 2024, showing a 0.8% decline, partly attributed to the effects of the Paris Summer Olympics, which redirected travel demand.
Spain remains the leader with 500.1 million overnight stays, up 3.3%, maintaining its status as Europe’s top tourism destination.
Decline in Total Arrivals
Despite the rise in overnight stays, total arrivals in Italy dropped by 3.3%, reaching 129.3 million visitors. This decline is mainly due to fewer domestic travelers (-2.2%), while international arrivals continued to increase (+0.9%).
Where Do Foreign Tourists Come From?
Foreign visitors now account for 54.6% of total overnight stays in Italy, with Germany as the leading country of origin. Despite economic concerns, German tourists remain loyal to Italy, followed by visitors from France, the UK, and the United States.
Economic Impact of Tourism
Tourism remains a key driver of Italy’s economy, contributing 10.8% to GDP and generating 13% of total employment. With its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, Italy continues to be a global tourism hotspot.
Future Challenges
Looking ahead, Italy must focus on sustainable tourism and diversifying its offerings to maintain this positive trend. With strategic policies and a commitment to quality, the country is well-positioned to strengthen its standing in the European and global tourism landscape.
